There are numerous spas throughout Arizona. From resorts to day spa, many offer services designed to make their visitors feel relaxed, pampered and isolated from the cares of their life for awhile. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that. When it comes to Scottsdale spas, a quick search will show you an array of facilities and venues offering their take on what “spa” really means. This got us thinking about how the concept of spa actually got started. Here is New Serenity Spa’s brief history of the modern day spa. Enjoy!

Spas Around the World: A History

In the early AD period (circa 20-50 AD) Romans began to use hot springs for curative purposes. Creating baths around these springs, the citizens of Rome found them to be a thoroughly relaxing experience. This soon became an especially popular form of resting and rejuvenating.

The baths thus became a staple of European life. And then right around 1300, the term “spa” first came into existence. A town called, appropriately enough, Spa, Belgium decided to highlight one of these hot spring baths by erecting a resort around it. People flocked to the region from all over the continent—dubbing this health mecca with the easy to remember name “spa.”

American Spas to Include Scottsdale Spas

By the 1800s this phenomenon known as the spa spread to North America. One of the first notable day spas in the country was established in the very early part of the 20th century in NYC by Elizabeth Arden. And throughout the 1900s the health spa only grew more and more prominent. Cities and even smaller townships across the nation began to embrace the spa as an effective way to give clients a temporary oasis. Today, the spa industry stands as a near 100 billion dollar industry in this country alone!
